What does a DOT Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) Do?

Conduct a face-to-face initial employee evaluation and clinical assessment to determine the level of assistance needed to resolve the alcohol and other drug issues.

Recommend and refer the employee to an appropriate education and/or treatment program.

Monitor the employee's progress while in treatment.

Conduct a face-to-face follow-up evaluation to determine if the employee has fully and successfully complied with the recommendations and treatment plan of the SAP.

Provide the Designated Employer Representative (DER) a follow-up evaluation with a drug and/or alcohol testing plan for up to five years.

Provide the employer and employee with recommendations concerning education and/or treatment
SERVICES
Face-to-Face Evaluation/Assesment

The SAP provides a thorough clinical assessment and evaluation, including psycho-social history and administering quantitative testing tools adhering to current clinical evidence based standards.
Referral & Level of Care Recommendation

The SAP provides an appropriate treatment plan and recommends clinically appropriate referrals that take into account the level and severity of substance abuse, cost, location and employee’s work schedule.
Monitoring Progress
The SAP monitors and follows the employee through the treatment and/or education requirement to encourage compliance and can report progress to employer

Final Face-to-Face
Evaluation

The SAP conducts a follow-up evaluation to determine if the employee has complied with the treatment plan. A follow-up testing schedule and aftercare plan is arranged at this time.
